Tweeter Beware

Aug 10

It’s mid-afternoon and you feel compelled to tell your followers how bored you are before quitting time or maybe it’s a random Tuesday and you’ve just checked into your third Foursquare location.

Each keystroke tells a story about who you are, what you do, and perhaps, most telling … what you value. These mini-billboards are broadcast throughout the Twitterverse at a frequency of 50 million tweets daily. That’s roughly equivalent to everyone in Gotham City tweeting about six times a day.

What’s the matter?  Don’t have the time to read that many tweets?  Don’t worry.

The Library of Congress is preserving every public tweet made since Twitter’s inception in 2006. Historical hardbacks are  inching over, making room on the “shelves” to save our digital past. Currently, the Library of Congress reports having “More than 167 terabytes of Web-based information, including legal blogs, Websites of candidates for national office and Websites’ of Members of Congress.”

Just think … your great grandkids will know how often you have been to your favorite restaurant,  got wasted over the weekend or any other mundane tidbit you’ve ever publicly tweeted.

Now, that’s 15 minutes of fame … or is that infamy?
