Knock Out Roses Plays the Lincoln
Jan 17
There’s a chill in the air. It’s Friday night at Raleigh’s Lincoln Theatre.
At five minutes to nine, the five-member-band Knock Out Roses stands outside of the back entrance (a heavy, metal door with no visible exterior door handle) sharing a last minute cigarette and a few encouraging words.
“So, who are you guys opening up for again?,” says Jeff Holmes, friend, follower and occasional band manager. ”Clover Leaf?”
“No, It’s Carbon Leaf,” says Jane Tarry, lead singer for Knock Out Rose, with a giggle. “Now, I’ll have to make sure I get it right on stage.” A few laughs fill the air and everyone assures her she’ll be great on stage.
Knock Out Roses, an indie-rock band from Raleigh, represents hard work and determination. They formed about a year ago when members of Overproof (Jane Tarry and Stefan Turner) united with musicians from The Infantry (brothers Dan and Nick Abbate and Lawson Taylor).
I snap a few backstage photos, excuse myself and head out front for the show.
The crowd is thick — easily a hundred people standing on the lower-level of the Lincoln, anticipating Knock Out Roses entrance.
The guys — Stefan, Dan, Nick and Lawson — take their places on stage and begin their signature first song: “Don’t Make Me.” The couple next to me begin to sway as the beat fills the room.
A few measures in, Jane enters stage left, dressed in black accented by a loose-fitting red tie and begins to sing, “Calm down now. I’m gonna get you out of here.”
And the crowd was hooked. To my left, I hear a female voice yell, “Yo, Jane!”
Following the second song, “Use You” Jane thanked the headliner, identifying them correctly as Carbon Leaf.
After their set, band members greeted fans in the lobby, signed a few autographs and posed for some photos next to their CD table. The show at the Lincoln was their soft-release for their debut CD.
