Miracle Whip Biscuits: Southern Traditions At Grandma’s House
Jul 15
A pat of butter struggles to hold its shape, unable to ignore the heat rising from a freshly, baked biscuit underneath, and finally, they dance. Bit by bit butter drips and drips … filling in every available crevice of edible comfort.
And in an instant, the fragrant aroma reaches out to my heart where it finds similar memories of melting butter on biscuits baked by my Grandma.
Her small, 12-by-14, eat-in kitchen is dressed with a floral, 80s print on top and a coordinating satin-matte, stripe on bottom, accented with a lavender chair railing.
An old, Friedrick window air conditioner peeks out from lacy, sill-length curtains where it waits to shoot invisible balls of ice at anyone daring to sit nearby.
Two large, chocolate brown pie-safes stand at the far wall holding Grandma’s fancy dishes — crystal pie plates, water goblets, candy dishes and more, all delicately perched atop her latest selection of decorative paper napkins.
Sure, most of the action takes place at the stove or in front of the sink — hand washing dishes, but the real joy bubbles around the table … a handmade, three-tiered lazy Susan table made by my grandfather and his brothers when they were younger.
Everyone pitches in to set the table.
Several well-loved, unmatched plates that Grandma has collected over the years, are flanked by glasses full of sweet tea and silverware — not real silver, of course.
Crocheted pot holders are scattered about the center tier, holding steaming bowls of vegetables and fried chicken. And my favorite … Grandma’s Miracle Whip biscuits, so hot they would make butter run.
Those biscuits were the best, because of their funny, lumpy shapes and because my Grandma made them.
